India’s Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) is hoping to increase its population of Asiatic lions, The Times of India has reported. Officials have said there are only two lions and a lioness left in the reserve.
SGNP Director, Dr P N Munde, said; “We are corresponding with the Zoo Authority and have expressed a desire to include two pairs of Asiatic lions in our existing animal family. We have got positive responses from zoos across the country.”
Munde added that the Park may “exchange a couple of white tigers” for the lions.
The lack of lions is reported to be harming the region’s tourism industry, with safari visitors unable to see wild lions.
