Nepal to expand air fleet

The Nepali government is planning to purchase seven aircraft within the next five years, as it seeks to boost tourism to the country, Bernama reported the Himalayan country’s Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation, Sharat Singh Bhandari, as saying. Speaking in Kathmandu on Sunday, Bhandari said that the government was planning the purchases to coincide with a tourism push which will include ‘Nepal Tourism Year 2011’ - during which the government is targeting one million foreign arrivals.”The government is supporting the deal to buy the planes. We will finalise the process by the end of this month,” Bhandari was quoted saying, adding that Boeing and Airbus had approached following the publication of the tender. It was not revealed which aircraft models were under consideration.The country’s state-run national carrier, Royal Nepal Airlines, currently operates a fleet of nine aircraft, according to its website; two Boeing 757-200s for international services, and seven DHC-6 Twin Otters which operate solely on domestic routes.
