The new international airport in Ahmedabad is being designed to invoke the spirit of the city’s annual kite-flying festival, The Times of India has reported. Currently under construction at a cost of INR2.9 billion (US$60.5 million), the airport will feature a roofline, with various kite shapes cut as skylights, according to architectural designers, CPG Corporation. These shapes will be three-dimensional compositions, “creating a system of trapezoidal-shaped frames that taper to a single node at the middle of the roof,” the company was reported saying.
The airport is scheduled to be operational by early next year.
