A security scanner that can see throughbottles and detect whether they contain explosive liquid will start trials nextmonth at Newcastle Airport, UK. Thetechnology could allow airports to lift restrictions on liquids in handluggage, meaning passengers would again be allowed to carry bottles of any sizeon board aircraft Passenger Terminal Today reports.
The British-built scanner works by firing an x-ray through the liquid anddetecting the ‘spectral signature’ of the image recorded on the screen. TheDepartment for Transport has said that it expects to be able to lift the ban onliquids sometime next year after it has seen the results of the trials.
