New Shanghai ‘passport’

TOURISM authorities in Shanghai have announcedthat an English-language version of its popular “tourist passport” would bereleased in May.
The passport was first released in Chineseearly in Feb, and the Shanghai Tourism Authority announced plans to distributeup to 1.2 million of the documents to tourists.
The “passport” offers discounts of 10-50% onvarious attractions and scenic locations in the city, and is aimed attravellers from neighbouring provinces as well as locals and foreign tourists.
The English versions of the documents willinitially be released in some “expat-gathering residential areas, and then tothe Commission’s service sites,” said an official.
MEANWHILE, a recent survey conductedby Shanghai’s Tourism Administrative Commission shows dissatisfaction with thepromotion of tour packages to Macau, Hong Kong and South-east Asia.
There was a more satisfactory result forpackages to Japan, South Korea and Australia.
The study polled more than 16000 travellersand covered both international and domestic destinations within China.
The Shanghai Daily quotedofficial Su Guangjian saying that in some cases advertising was “too far awayfrom reality”.
