Oman’s top-end cruise market is poised for strong growth, with two dozen cruiseoperators including Cunard and Royal Caribbean now including Muscat on their itineraries. The increased interest displayed by cruise operators is largely attributed to Muscat’s recently inaugurated US$7 million Port Qaboos cruise terminal, according to Oman’s Under Secretary of Tourism, Mohammed bin Hamoud al Toobi.”Few people realise the value of cruise tourism, an area of great interest to us,” he said. “For several years, we have enjoyed double digit growth in ship arrivals, a medium sized ship of 1,500 passengers is equivalent to three Boeing Jumbos landing, so this is a key opportunity”.The Queen Mary 2, Cunard’s largest and most expensive liner, and Royal Caribbean’s Brilliance of the Seas celebrated their maiden voyages to Muscat in January. The new cruise terminal, which was officially inaugurated in February, features an information centre, shopping arcade and Duty Free Area.
