The final shortlist has been revealed in the New7Wonders campaign to find the world’s best cities.
The 28 finalists have been whittled down from a long-list of 77 cities announced earlier this month. The public will now be able to vote for their favourite city, with a further three elimination phases planned before the final list of seven is unveiled on 7 December 2014.
The final 28, which was selected by a “panel of experts”, includes entries from all six inhabited continents. No country is represented twice, and the exactly half of the cities are national capitals.
Asia has the most entries (11), followed by Europe (seven), North America (four), South America (three), Africa (two) and Oceania (one). Perth was named as Oceania’s only shortlisted city, with Sydney and Auckland both being eliminated from the long-list of 77, while other notable omissions from the final 28 include Paris, Rome, Dubai and Rio de Janeiro. There is also no place in the shortlist for Asia’s key cities of Tokyo, Hong Kong and Singapore.
Bernard Weber, who founded New7Wonders Cities, said the shortlist was “exciting in its variety.”
“This outstanding shortlist of 28 cities mirrors the diversity of urban society, especially when, for the first time in history, more than half of our planet’s population lives in cities. Going forward, the New7Wonders Cities campaign will encourage debate about how cities should respond to the challenges of the present and the future. By voting in this worldwide campaign, people everywhere can decide the 7 cities that best represent the achievements and aspirations of our global urban civilization,” Weber said.
The New7Wonders Cities campaign follows previous polls to decide the New7Wonders of the World and the New7Wonders of Nature.
