The Malaysian government has done away with immediate effect the passport-free weekend visits by Malaysians and Thais to the border markets in Wang Prachan, Thailand, and Wang Kelian in Perlis, for security reasons.
Bernama quoted Deputy Minister of Internal Security Mohd Johari Baharum as saying that the move comes on the heels of “too many undesirable incidents at other border towns particularly increasing smuggling activities”.
“The country’s security is of utmost importance. The government cannot afford to compromise on this matter,” he was quoted saying.
Malaysians and Thais have been enjoying passport-free entry and exit to Wang Prachan and Wang Kelian respectively on Saturdays and Sundays for the past 15 years.
