The Indian government has no intention of scrapping fees for tourist visas, the country’s Minister of Tourism & Culture has stated.
Dr Mahesh Sharma made the statement in parliament recently, although he added that a “broad discussion” is underway for the “overall liberalisation” of India’s visa policy.
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has focused on boosting its tourism industry in recent years. This has included a major expansion of its e-tourist visa system, which is now available for the citizens of 150 countries, and plans have also been mooted for a new long-term, multiple-entry tourist visa.
At present, an e-tourist visa to India can cost as much as US$60.
