The Indian state of Kerala has been luring tourists with its beaches, rivers, mountains, forests and ayurveda. Of the half a million tourists visiting Kerala, only 6% make it to the north of the region. But as Economic Times reported, things are set to change with the introduction of homestays.
The state’s six northernmost districts – Kasaragod, Kannur, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Malappuram and Palakkad – individual entrepreneurs are putting up homestays – a perennial favourite with tourists.
“The district now has around 40 homestays. Most of them have come up in the last three years,” KV Biju, the Secretary of the Wayanad District Tourism Promotion Council was quoted saying.
Fifteen of the 40 have already received classification certificates from the Kerala Tourism Department.
