North Korea has cut the population of its capital city Pyongyang by approximately half a million people, a South Korean government report showed yesterday. Reported by the South’s Yonhap news agency, the study said that an estimated 500,000 people had been excluded from Pyongyang after the North Korean government transferred several southern districts of the capital to neighbouring North Hwanghae province. While no reason was cited for the move, the report speculated that food shortages in the capital could be behind the decision.
