Settling down to watch a good Boxing Day movie has long been a traditional activity in Western households. But now North Koreans have been able to do the same, after the first-ever Western-made film to appear on the reclusive country’s state-run TV was aired on 26 December 2010. Reported to be in recognition of the 10th anniversary of diplomatic ties with the UK, North Korea screen the 2002 movie ‘Bend it Like Beckham’, starring Keira Knightley. The BBC reported that the broadcast ran eight shorter than the original version of the film, suggesting that the gentle football flick may have been edited. Whether Kim Jong-il watched it is unclear; I hear he’s more of a Bond man anyway.
