Norwegian has expanded its long-haul fleet with the addition of its first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft.
The new twin-aisle jet is being leased to Norwegian by MG Aviation and will enable the airline to open new routes to North America, South America and Asia.
The B787-9 comes equipped with 344 seats: 53 in business class and 291 in economy. In total, the airline has ordered 29 B787-9s, in addition to its eight existing 291-seat B787-8s, so the airline will have considerable scope to expand its long-haul operations.
“The 787-9 Dreamliner will provide Norwegian with unrivalled operational advantages, large improvements in fuel efficiency and much lower costs,” said Norwegian’s CEO Bjorn Kjos. “In addition, it is an airplane that offers an exceptional in-flight experience.”
Norwegian currently serves more than 130 destinations across Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, the USA and Southeast Asia. At present, Bangkok is the airline’s only destination in the Asia Pacific region, but Kjos has previously stated that future routes could include India and China.
The first B787-9, which features a picture of Swedish actress Greta Garbo on the tail, will be deployed on the Oslo-Orlando route from 27 February.
