28 Sep 09 (TravMedia.com): New South Wales will be promoted as the premier surf destination in Australia as part of a NSW Government tourism initiative to be launched today.
Minister for Tourism Jodi McKay, who will launch the new initiative with prominent female surfers Layne Beachley and Sally Fitzgibbons at Manly Beach today, said NSW is home to some spectacular surf destinations.
“Surfing and beach culture is a vital part of our national identity and it’s a great way for visitors to connect with local people and our lifestyle,” Ms McKay said.
“This is a great way to tap into this interest and to ensure we position NSW as the premier surfing destination in Australia.
“We want to highlight the beauty of the NSW coastline and the large number of dedicated surf schools and beaches available to holiday makers up and down the State.”
Ms McKay said the initiative will target a number of key surfing markets including families looking for a coastal holiday.
“Surfing is great fun for the whole family and we will be working closely with surf schools to let mums and dads know about some of the great experiences on offer in NSW,” Ms McKay said.
“Tourism NSW will also be targeting the youth market, including backpackers, international students and working holiday makers who often want to experience Australia’s surf.”
Ms McKay said the initiative will include a designated Tourism NSW surf website as well as advertising and promotions in a number of surfing and tourism publications.
“Tourism NSW has partnered with Surfing NSW and with surf schools around NSW to promote our local beaches and encourage visitors to embrace one of our country’s favourite pastimes,” Ms McKay said.
“We are also home to 32 designated surfing schools in the country and these centres provide a professional and safe environment for everyone to learn to surf and enjoy the coast.”
Minister for Sport and Recreation Kevin Greene will also present Layne Beachley with an additional $45,000 from the NSW Government for the upcoming 2009 Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic.
Mr Greene said the NSW Government is proud to be supporting the annual surfing event and that this is in addition to funding already provided by the NSW Government through Events NSW.
“Layne is a local Sydney girl who has become an Australian, and global, surfing legend,” Mr Greene said.
“She is a fantastic role model for young women and part of the new campaign will be to promote the many surf events that take place in the State throughout the year including this year’s Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic.
“The Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic is a fantastic women’s surfing event that helps to promote the high level of women’s surfing nationally and internationally.
“It also showcases the beautiful Northern Beaches of Sydney to Australia and the rest of the world.
“I encourage everyone to get out to Dee Why and support competitors in this week’s Beachley Classic.”
