British Airways (BA) witnessed a decline in the number of passengers carried on routes from the Middle East and Africa in August 2010 compared to the same month in 2009.The latest figures from the struggling British flag carrier reveal a 0.1% year on year drop in passenger numbers and 0.1% drop in Revenue Passenger Kilometres (RPK). This compares to BA’s overall global declines in August 2010 of 0.1% and 2.9% respectively. The financial year-to-date figures (April to August) paint a greater tale of woe - passenger numbers on MEA routes declined 7.4% year on year, albeit more favourable than the 9.7% slump for all routes, while RPK plummeted 7.5% (from 9,545 to 8,826) for MEA compared to the global 9.6% drop (from 50,159 to 45,333).Available seats in August 2010 on MEA routes nudged down 1.1% compared to August 2009 and for the April to August 2010 period, dropped 4.5%. Global Available Seats per Kilometre (ASKs) fared worse at -2.6% and -7.6% respectively. However, load factors on MEA routes improved slightly at 80.4 in August compared to 80.3 in August 2009, but declined for the financial year so far by 2.4%. This slump outdid the global decline in load factors of 1.8%.
