A new Peninsula Hotel will be developed in the centre of Yangon.
The luxury hotel brand’s operator, Hongkong & Shanghai Hotels (HSH), has signed an agreement with Yoma Strategic Holdings that will lead to the creation of Myanmar’s first Peninsula hotel, located in the former Burma Railway Company headquarters.
The colonial building, which dates from the 1880s, is located on Bogyoke Aung San Road in the central business district of Yangon, close to Scott’s Market. It will now be refurbished and reopened as the Peninsula Yangon.
“Myanmar is one of the world’s most exciting emerging markets and we see good potential in this market as a luxury travel and tourism destination. We are delighted to partner with Yoma, who share our long-term vision for the success of this project and have a proven track record of successful investments in Myanmar,” said Clement Kwok, managing director & CEO of HSH.
The Yangon property will add to existing Peninsula hotels in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Tokyo, New York, Chicago, Beverly Hills, Bangkok and Manila. The Peninsula Paris is expected to open in 2014, while the company is also planning to launch a new hotel in London.
