Travel Republic’s Kane Pirie defended the company’s charge-back scheme at the Travel Convention today, saying that the method provides adequate financial protection. The new ABTA Board Member said the scheme was more reliable than ATOL protection and advised customers to book through credit and debit cards. “The vast majority of debit cards are now covered as well. There has been huge change in this area in the last 12 months,” he explained. In addition, he said that while the industry focused on ATOL , the banking industry has already helped by including transaction security. “The ignorance of the charge-back scheme is one of the biggest jokes in the whole consumer protection debate,” he said. Meanwhile, Pirie added that an ATOL reform would be unlikely as airlines would not be included. He also insisted that there will be enough capacity next year, despite the Goldtrail and Kiss Flights collapses.
