At Australian Tourism Exchange in Brisbane a spokesman for the carrier told attendees the changes were “a signal of Qantas’ commitment to Australian tourism”.
Flights between Shanghai and Sydney will be increased to five per week, while this morning QF also announced the introduction of two weekly services between Shanghai and Melbourne.
Qantas will also introduce additional seasonal capacity to cope with demand for travel to the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
The Shanghai-Melbourne flights, which will launch next Mar, will be operated using a two-class Airbus A330 and will bring to ten the number of scheduled QF return services each week between China and Australia. Qantas also announced increased frequencies for flights between Australia and the USA, with two additional Brisbane-Los Angeles flights from Mar 2008, making it a daily service, as well as an extra frequency between Sydney and LA.
Qantas will operate 43 flights per week across the Pacific once the new services take off. Other changes include more flights between Sydney and Johannesburg in South Africa from Nov 2008 as well as the introduction of non-stop flights from Sydney to Santiago in Chile using a Boeing 747-400.
More route additions are expected to be announced in the coming months in the lead-up to the Qantas group receiving its first A380 and 787 aircraft in Aug 2008.
