Qantas has warned Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) it may be forced to switch its forthcoming Airbus A380 flights to San Francisco if it is forced to park the superjumos at remote stands, The Australian has reported. Airport bosses had said that it planned to put A380 passengers on shuttle buses connecting to terminal gates, as the close parking facilities at LAX are unable to handle the huge girth of the superjumbo.
Qantas Senior Executive Vice-President for the Americas and Pacific, Wally Mariani, said that remote facilities would be not be acceptable to the airline for regularly scheduled flights. “If in the future LAX is unable to keep up with the need for additional (very large aircraft) gates, we would be forced to relocate our A380 services to San Francisco,” Mariani warned.
Qantas is currently the largest international carrier operating out of LAX with 40 flights per week. Its first A380 service between Melbourne and Los Angeles is due to take off in late October.
