Polar adventure company Quark Expeditions spearheaded a campaign to tackle climate change on Friday as it participated in the Thermostat Challenge, which aims to raise awareness of sea ice habitat degradation and its impact on wild polar bears.
As a corporate sponsor of charity Polar Bears International (PBI), Quark took the Thermostat Challenge to help raise awareness of how our daily actions impact the sea ice habitat of polar bears and to show its commitment to greenhouse gas reductions.
The challenge invited families, schools and businesses to lower their thermostats a few degrees for the day in order to reduce carbon emissions and help save polar bears.
Participants were also encouraged to adjust their thermostats by two degrees up or down, depending on the season, for the entire year and to take other steps to save energy.
“Saving energy produced by carbon-based fuels reduces our carbon emissions and can slow and even reverse global warming, which causes sea ice to melt,” said Krista Wright, PBI’s executive director. “Polar bears rely on sea ice for reaching their prey. Without sea ice, there will be no polar bears.”
Quark has invited other Thermostat Challengers to share photos of their participation via Instagram with the hashtag #saveourseaice.
