The number of people travelling by train in the UK increased 6% in this year’s second quarter, new statistics have revealed. Figures from the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC) has shown that journeys from London and the south east increased 6.9%, while the number of long journeys rose 5.1% and regional routes increased 3.8%. ATOC said the reasonable job market, high petrol prices, cheap advanced tickets and more on-train services had helped boost numbers. “Sales of cheap Advance tickets have shot up as more and more passengers are booking ahead as a way of saving money,” explained Michael Roberts, chief executive of ATOC. “Every part of the rail network has reported growth for well over a year now as the industry has emerged strongly from the recession.”
