China Southern Airlines carried a record 5.98 million passengers in 2008, the company has announced. The result reinforced the carrier’s position as China’s number one airline, and translated into a profit of US$6.3 million.
The airline is thought to have made significant gains through right-way bets of its fuel hedging contracts.
China Southern operates a fleet of 342 modern Airbus, Boeing and Embraer jet aircraft, and plans to expand its international network in 2009, with destinations including London, Brisbane and New York among those under consideration.
