Local residents in Cairns have launched their own tourism promotion campaign, The Cairns Post has reported. The newspaper-backed campaign, ‘Why we love Cairns’, is in response to Qantas’ decision to axe direct services between Cairns and Japan. Cairns Post Editor Mark Alexander said locals were determined to boost tourism, despite the setback. “Who better to promote to the world what’s great about the tropical far north than the locals?” Alexander said. Already hundreds of locals have logged on to the newspaper’s website to share their highlights.
