Riau Islands calls for support on oil removal

The administration of the Riau Islands, Indonesia, has called on neighbors Singapore and Malaysia to share responsibilities disposing of sludge oil by tankers travelling through the Malacca Strait. According to a Jakarta Post report, the cost of tackling the sludge oil pollution caused was expected to increase to IDR250 million (US$26,700) this year from last year’s IDR100 million.
Since the most recent spillage two weeks ago, oil sludge waste has swamped the mangrove forests of the Riau Islands’ Tanjung Bemban. Other parts of Riau Islands affected by the pollution included Batam, Bintan and Karimun.
