The Ritz-Carlton Sanya has built a shelter for sea turtles.
In association with conversation group Sea Turtles 911, the new shelter is designed to help injured and handicapped turtles who are unable to survive in the wild, and rehabilitated sea turtles awaiting to be released back into the ocean.
To celebrate the opening of the new shelter, a large crowd consisting of volunteers from Sea Turtles 911, the Blue Ocean Association and Hainan Normal University, joined forces with hotel staff and guests for a grand opening and sea turtle release ceremony.
“Since 2009, [when] we began to cooperate with Sea Turtles 911… we made people aware of the importance of the protection of sea turtles through continuously educating our hotel guests and local fishermen,” said the luxury hotel’s GM, Michel Goget.
“We finally built a shelter for sea turtles. The handicap turtles can freely enjoy five-star care as educational ambassadors of the ocean, and rehabilitated turtles have a temporary place to stay for careful behavioural monitoring just before they begin their journey back home into the ocean.”
Many turtles, including the critically endangered hawksbill and endangered green sea turtle nest on the beaches of Hainan Island.
