A Ryanair flight was forced to make an emergency landing at Rome’s Ciampino airport yesterday after it suffered “substantial damage” having been struck by birds. The BBC has reported that the airport has now been closed as the stricken plane remains parked on the runway.
The budget airline said the plane suffered engine problems from multiple bird strikes as it came in to land at Rome, en route from Frankfurt. Passengers exited the plane using its emergency chutes. Two cabin crew and three passengers had been taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.
