Rome’s tourism image is to undergo a restyling, according to the city’s deputy mayor Mauro Cutrufo. New tourism initiatives are set to focus on five ‘sub-schemes’ in an attempt to double its tourist arrival numbers. These will include the conference; fairs and exhibitions; golf; nautical sports and leisure activities and theme and public park market. The efforts are in accumulation to the opening of Rome’s second tourism centre and the city’s Olympic 2020 bid. “Work on the second tourism centre is in an advanced stage, more than half of which will be opened over 2012/13,” said Cutrufo. “The golf district has already been completed and is being marketed as a tourist package to tour operators worldwide. In addition we will also have a new public golf course ready in 2012.” Meanwhile by the end of 2012, there will be more permanent exhibitions, an aquarium and parks will be revamped. It is also rumoured that a Roman Empire theme park could open in the future.
