China’s Shenzhen Airlines has boosted the tourism industry in Sabah with the launch of direct services from Shenzhen to Kota Kinabalu. Bernama reported Tourism Malaysia’s State Director for Sabah, Mohd Roslan Abdullah, as saying that the northern Borneo region had recorded an annual growth in tourist arrivals from China, from 61,567 tourists in 2006 to 87,175 in 2008.
“This shows that there is a healthy growth in terms of tourist arrivals from that country. With the recent addition of China’s carrier Shenzhen Airlines making its way to Sabah, we hope for more tourists from China,” Abdullah was reported saying.
The airline launched the new route on Saturday, and will initially serve the route with charter service, with a view to launching scheduled services in the near future.
“Our aim is to make Shenzhen as a hub, passengers from Malaysia especially from Sabah will fly to other cities in China via Shenzhen, and vice versa those from China will go to Sabah through Shenzhen,” the carrier’s General Manager - Sales, Liu Zhen, was quoted saying. Kota Kinabalu becomes the airline’s second Malaysian destination, after Kuala Lumpur.
