Police in Jamaica are reported to be baffled by the theft of hundreds of tons of sand from a beach on the country’s north coast. The BBC has reported that in July police discovered that 500 truck-loads of the yellow stuff had been removed outside a planned resort at Coral Spring beach. Since then however, detectives are no closer to finding the culprits. Hotel developers are suspected, because a good beach is seen as a valuable asset to hotels on the island.
Police are now carrying out forensic tests on beaches along the coast to see if any of the sand matches the type stolen. Meanwhile the US$108 million Coral Springs hotel development has been put on hold until its beach is recovered.
