SAS continues fleet renewal

SAS has announced that it will phase out its MD80 and ageing Boeing 737s, and replace them with Boeing 737 NG (Next Generation) aircraft. The carrier has signed an agreement to lease in five new 737-800 NG aircraft from GECAS, and has signed a further Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the plane leasing company for 12 Boeing 737-700s. All MD80 based at Copenhagen will also be replaced with Airbus A320s. The replacement will start in 2012 and is expected to be completed by 2016. SAS President & CEO Rickard Gustafson, said; “We are very pleased that we now can continue the process of renewing our fleet. This will reduce complexity and improve our environmental performance.”
