Saudi Arabia eyes tourism boom

Saudi Arabia is planning for a huge tourism, with the sectorwitnessing rapid growth and several mega-projects springing up across thekingdom. According to a Gulf News report, the global economic downturn has seeninvestors turn to the country as the next potential bright spot for tourism.
Several multi-billion riyal projectsare in the pipeline, including several resorts on the Red Sea coast and on thecoast of the Arabian Gulf, in addition to thesouthern Aseer region and the tourist destination of Taif.
Tourism spending in thelast year exceeded SAR74 billion (US$19.8 billion), Gulf News reported the TourismInformation Research Centre as saying. Now
the Saudi Travel and Tourism Mart 2009,which was formally launched in Riyadhon Sunday, is exploring the prospect of attracting more investments in thesector. Several papers focusing on exchanges of expertise between Saudi andforeign investors as well as the findings of researches and studies, are beingpresented.
Dr Salah al Bakheet, Deputy Chairman ofSaudi’s Supreme Commission for Tourism, said that his body plans to offer awide variety of mechanisms and incentives given by the commission to encourageinvestment. He added that there are 12,000 major tourism landmarks anddestinations identified by the commission nationwide.
