The Scottish Passenger Agents’ Association (SPAA) has called on the government to immediately pause the implementation of ATOL reform. In a letter to Westminster MPs, the association has urged changes to be stopped and asked for urgent talks with ministers and other travel bodies, such as ABTA. Brian Potter, president of SPAA outlined the impractical implementation period for ATOL changes in the letter, as well as the unfair protection ground that would come into play on 1 January. The association has provided its members with a template letter to address their issues to their local MP and has urged agents to gather support as soon as possible. “Issue after issue is now coming to light, few or none of which appear to have been thought through by the DfT and/or the CAA,” added Sandy MacPherson, political convenor at SPAA. “It seems that the process, so far, has been little better than slipshod, and the only sensible course of action would be for implementation to be delayed until the various issues raised by the travel community have been considered and taken into account”. It has asked the government to consider a customer levy based system, eliminate the Air Travel Trust Fund and build an efficient fund replenishment system.
