Shanghai will open second cruise-ship terminal in April 2010, enabling the city to cope with an expected boom in the sector, according to a Shanghai Daily report.
More than 30 luxury passenger liners are scheduled to dock in Shanghai this month – a city record – bringing 25,000 visitors to the city, Lu Jun, a spokesperson for the Shanghai port immigration police was reported saying.
About 20% of cruise ships currently have to dock at the mouth of the Yangtze River because they’re too big to fit under the Yangpu Bridge, forcing tourists to spend up to four hours on buses getting into the city and back to their ships even though they may only have a 12-hour stopover.
The new terminal will be located closer to town at Paotai Bay in Wusong Port, Baoshan District. It will include three berths with a capacity to handle 70,000-ton vessels, the report said. The new terminal will also include ferry services to downtown Shanghai as well as buses.
According to the port authority, cruise ship arrivals into Shanghai will increase 12% this year. Next year’s World Expo is expected to boost these numbers even further.
