Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts plans to double its China presence within four years. In a interview with the Shanghai Daily, Shangri-La’s Vice President of Sales & Marketing, Sarah Chen said that the company plans to add to its current portfolio of 29 properties in mainland China.
“By that time [2013], about 60% of the group’s hotels will be located in China, up from the current 40%,” Ms Chen told the Shanghai-based newspaper. “We are targeting key secondary cities for future expansion as travel demand is set to grow rapidly over the coming years,” she added.
To strengthen its position in China, Shangri-La has been increasing its sales and marketing activities over the past eight months to combat unfavorable market conditions, which include a huge influx of supply into the Chinese hotel sector. Ms Chen stated however, that Shangri-La remained “optimistic about a robust growth in travel demand in China”.
