The Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq) has commenced the second phase of Flag Island development. This development aims to turn the island into a new tourist destination offering varied facilities and amenities. The new facilities will be open to public in the first quarter of 2015.
Upon completion of the second phase, the island will feature recreational facilities and amenities, including an open-air 1000-seat amphitheatre, an art gallery, and shops, restaurants, and cafes.
Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, chairperson of Shurooq , said: “We are planning to position the Flag Island as one of the must-visit tourist, cultural and art destinations. This is in addition to the permanent exhibition of the union’s achievements. We are going to develop cultural, art and national activities which will be hosted in the island throughout the year.”
The open amphitheatre on completion will be able to accommodate 200 guests, with an additional capacity of up to 1000 spectators on national, social, cultural and art days and celebrations. The island is being developed by Shurooq in collaboration with Sharjah Department of Public Works and a number of government bodies and departments.
