Signals for train strike add to Easter travel chaos

Easter travel plans may be affected by the train network as well as flight disruptions, after rail union RMT announced that a strike could happen soon.A ballot for action of signalling and supervisory staff returned with a 54% vote for strike action and a 77% vote for action short of a strike. The dispute is over the RMT’s view that the Office of Rail Regulation’s recent report fails to protect rail sfatey, job security and operational arrangements. Final confirmation of the strikes is expected to be released on 25 March and talks with Network Rail are expected to continue next week. “Nobody should be under any illusions about just how determined RMT members are to win our fight against Network Rail’s cuts programme and to stop this reckless gamble with rail safety,” said General Secretary of RMT, Bob Crow.Meanwhile, The Times has reported that talks between BA and Unite have continued to show little signs of progress.
