The number of visitors to Singapore reached 844,000 in August, down just 0.7% from August 2008, representing the smallest year-on-year monthly decline so far in 2009. According to a ChannelNewsAsia, citing figures from the Singapore Tourism Board (STB), 844,000 visitors arrived in the Lion City last month, with Indonesia, Australia, China, India and Malaysia providing Singapore’s top five source markets. Visitors from these five countries accounted for 47.6% of total visitor arrivals. The largest increase in visitors came from Malaysia, rising 40% year-on-year. Arrivals from Hong Kong meanwhile rose 34.7%, to 36,000 travellers.
The STB was reported saying that the growth in traffic from these countries could be attributed to airfare promotions coinciding with Malaysia’s National Day and Hong Kong’s summer holidays.
Visitor arrivals from Australia (+2.5%), the Philippines (+2.5%), Taiwan (+3.3%) and Germany (+5.9%) also saw growth. Singapore has said it expects to receive between 9.0 million and 9.5 million travellers this year, generating an expected revenue of up to SG$12.5 billion (US$8.8 billion).
