It’s an extension of the Late Night Shopping initiative which started as an annual event during the Great Singapore Sale to a monthly event since July 2006 and now a weekly affair.
The Singapore Tourism Board said, besides shopping, there would also be music, magic, cabaret, mime and dance performances to add more buzz and vibrancy along Orchard Road. “Besides becoming more vibrant with the influx of new international brands, the entire retail experience here is also changing to accommodate the increasingly nocturnal lifestyles of locals and visitors,” said Andrew Phua, STB’s Director of Cluster Development, Tourism Shopping and Dining. Tourism shopping amounted to S$3.69 billion (US$2.43 billion) last year, contributing almost half of total tourist expenditure.
The STB said its target is S$30 billion in tourism receipts by 2015 - that’s when 17 million visitors are expected on the island yearly. Wisma Atria, a shopping centre which has supported the move since July 2006, said shopper traffic at its mall jumps 20% during these late shopping days.
