Singapore’s Formula One (F1) night race in September is proving to be a money-spinner for hotels in neighbouring Malaysia, Business Times reported.
It said some visitors found rates at Johor Bahru in southern Malaysia going for a fraction of what were being charged in Singapore.
The report quoted Johor Bahru-based travel agency, New Asia Holidays, organising a special four-day/three-night F1 travel package, complete with daily return transfers between Johor Bahru and Singapore.
It costs SG$800 (US$587) per person and has received 350 confirmations - mostly from Europe – according to the agency.
The report also quoted the five-star Puteri Pacific JB going for MYR500++ (US$153) per night, with a minimum of three nights, still much cheaper than what some Singapore hotels were charging.
The report also quoted Patrick Fiat, GM for Singapore’s Royal Plaza on Scotts, saying that staying in Johor Baru during the F1 week would also come with a heavy price to pay, such as traffic jams and distance. Rooms at the Royal Plaza are going at SG$960 per night with a minimum of two nights during the race period.
