Singapore’s hospitality and tourism institute, SHATEC, is to undergo a SG$70 million (US$49.8 million) revamp that will produce graduates in new fields, helping them to land jobs in the more sophisticated restaurant, hotel and attraction scene.
The school revealed this at its 25th-anniversary celebrations last night, including a new logo and name – SHATEC Institutes.
“Things are happening very fast, businesses are merging and symbiotic. So, we need to prepare our students to cope with these changes and be proficient in dealing with the human experience,” Chief Executive Steven Chua was quoted saying by The Straits Times.
Starting next year, students – dubbed ‘hosts’ – will learn soft skills such as guest communication and hosting. They will be trained to be connoisseurs of classical music, wine, art and luxury brands, the report said.
They would also be overseas study trips. The first takes place next month, with two students flying to Piedmont, Italy, for a week’s stint at the renowned Italian Culinary Institute for Foreigners.
