Singapore sees 2008 arrivals drop

Singaporesaw a 1.6% drop in visitor arrivals last year, welcoming 10.1 million visitors.
Indonesia(1,765,000), China (1,079,000), Australia (833,000), India (778,000) andMalaysia (647,000) were Singapore’s top five visitor-generating markets in2008. These markets accounted for about 50% of total visitor arrivals in 2008.
Thedecline in visitor arrivals to Singapore reflects the impact of the globaleconomic slowdown on consumer sentiments and discretionary spending, theSingapore Tourism Board said in a statement.
Thehotel sector was estimated to achieve an all-time record of S$2.1 billion(US$1.39 billion) in room revenue in 2008, posting a growth of 12.1% over theprevious year.
Average occupancy was estimated to reach 81% – 6percentage points lower than 2007. However both average room rate (ARR) andrevenue per available room (revPAR) set new highs. ARR was estimated to havereached SG$246 for 2008, an increase of 22% over 2007, while revPAR grew by13.5% to SG$199.
