A total of MYR21.96 billion (US$6.2 billion) in tourism receipts was generated by more than 16 million visitors to Malaysia from Singapore last year, Bernama reported. Malaysia’s Tourism Minister, Azalina Othman Said, added that 28% of this total was spent in the retail sector.
“We expect this to increase further as, in this time of economic slowdown, everyone will be more price sensitive and Malaysia offers them great value for money,” the Minster was quoted saying.
