Middle East Airlines (MEA) has announced that it will join the SkyTeam alliance next year, extending the alliance’s presence in the region. The airline alliance said the new member would allow it to ‘compete more efficiently’ and help move into the Western Africa market. “The Middle East is a strategic market for our alliance as we continue to extend the SkyTeam network to all corners of the globe,” said Leo van Wijk, chairman of SkyTeam. “The region has seen an impressive growth in traffic over the past decade and we want to engage actively in this expansion.”China Airlines and China Eastern are set to join the alliance this year, while Garuda Indonesia, Aerolineas Argentinas and Saudi Arabian Airlines will also become members in 2012.
