India and Sri Lanka have taken a step closer to resuming passenger ferry services between the two nations with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on Passenger Transportation by Sea, outlining cooperation on the service. As business in Sri Lanka begins to boom in the long-awaited post-war era, demand for affordable transportation between the two countries is soaring. Early indications are that the service will run from Tuticorin to Colombo and Talaimannar to Rameswaram, offering cheap fares, quick passage and a 100kg luggage allowance which is significantly more than the airlines permit. The Hindu is reporting that the service may begin later than official had originally hoped, though no date has been issued. A joint committee is being held in Colombo on 10-11 January where national delegates will thrash out modalities of the service. The overall package looks likely to take the shape of a public private partnership as various private shipping operators have already expressed interest in running operations.
