According to the Times of India, places such as Sikar, Badoi, Moga, Phillaur, Coimbatore, Bhubaneshwar, to name a few, are experiencing regular outflow of tourists abroad.
As per industry estimates, the report said, the growth of first-time travellers out of tier-II cities is around 40-45%.
Over 40% of first-time travellers travel to South-East Asian countries, while 25-30% are bound for European sectors.
Manoharan, director, Tourism Malaysia told the news agency, “In 2006, Malaysia received 74.2% of first-time travellers from India and this segment continues to grow with a major contribution from tier-II cities.”
Results earlier this year showed, Indian visitor arrivals to Singapore have almost doubled in the last five years as TDA has previously reported.
Another popular destination apart from Singapore and Malaysia is Thailand.
Australia, New Zealand, Dubai, Switzerland and South Germany too have seen a significant boost of small-town travellers said the report.
Fuelling the surge are rise in incomes, access to more information, competitive fares, attractive tour packages, better connectivity are some of the reasons.
“The rise in disposable incomes has led to more families from small towns opting for foreign holidays. After all, a foreign holiday is aspirational by nature,” Sunil Gupta COO of SOTC & Kuoni Holidays, was quoted by Times of India as saying.
