Intelligent Spas has published the first Spa Industry Report for Asia Pacific, containing data on all 42 countries across the region. The report found that the spa industry is active in 31 of these 42 countries (74%), with nine countries considered mature spa markets, seven observed as growing spa markets and 15 perceived as emerging spa markets.
The report found that there are more than 3,500 spas currently operating in the Asia Pacific region. These spas collectively generate approximately US$2 billion in revenue per annum and employ in excess of 50,000 people. The mature spa markets, which include the two largest spa markets – Thailand and Australia – host 82% of total spas within the region and employ approximately 86% of all spa employees in the region.
Forty-five percent of spa markets contained spa-related training facilities, however only 6% of spa markets enforced a national training standard. This implies the standard of training is determined by each training facility, which may be inconsistent with international training standards.
Eleven countries were classified as potential future market, which is defined as an industry with no or very little history of spa operations and limited supporting or complementary businesses already operating. These countries were typically very small and relatively isolated such as Kiribati and Tuvalu. The report predicted that as tourism increases in these countries, so too will the interest in spa services.
“This new Regional Spa Industry Report is a vital resource in understanding the spa industry across Asia Pacific and will prove useful in its continued development” stated Julie Garrow, Managing Director of the report’s creator, Intelligent Spas. “Following the global economic instability the world has experienced over recent years, this research is timely to assist stakeholders within the industry to recognise changes in each marketplace, adapt their business strategies accordingly, identify new business opportunities and maximise overall performance.”
