A high level delegation from Sri Lanka is visiting Dubai to participate in a two-day meeting with heads of all Sri Lankan Missions in the Middle East. The party, which includes the country’s Deputy Minister of Tourism, Faizer Musthapha, and Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) Managing Director, Dileep Mudadeniya, will be considering ways to attract more travellers from Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries to Sri Lanka.
“Arabs are looking for new and unexplored destinations within close proximity and Sri Lanka, which is only a couple of hours flying time away, has what it takes,” said Heba al Ghais al Mansoori, the SLTPB’s Middle East Director.
“For a small island, Sri Lanka offers a truly amazing variety of attractions. The coasts are studded with palm-lined beaches, some with world-class surf breaks, there are a lot of cultural attractions, elephant-led festival processions, Buddhist statues and towering stupas of the ancient capitals of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa,” she added.
The GCC is one of Sri Lanka’s major travel origin markets and in 2008 Sri Lanka has witnessed significant growth from Gulf travellers. The Dubai meeting, chaired by Sri Lanka’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Rohitha Bogollagama, will conclude today.
