Sri Lankan Airlines expects to replace its older fleet of short haul Airbus A320s with new deliveries starting December.
“We are hopeful of doing a cash neutral deal given that the lease costs are coming down and newer aircraft are available in the market, which leads to lower operating costs, more fuel efficiency,” Chief Executive Manoj Gunewardena told Lanka Business Online.
“So even though we may currently carry old aircraft in our fleet with low lease rentals, these can be replaced with newer, slightly more expensive aircraft with far better operating efficiencies.”
The airline is studying a mix of A320s, A319 and A321 aircraft, the reports said.
Gunewardena was quoted saying that they were looking at leasing aircraft “brand new or nearly new” under two years old.
Sri Lankan has had a tough first quarter with high fuel prices pushing profits down. While the oil bubble appeared to have burst, he remained cautious, the report said.
It put in place a fuel surcharge in July which has started to yield results.
