Indonesia’s Sriwijaya Air intends to make Malaysia’s Penang airport regional hub to ASEAN destinations, Bernama has reported, with further regional expansion in the pipeline. The Jakarta-based carrier will start its first flights to Malaysia, between Medan and Penang, on 15 September.
Sriwijaya Air Medan District Manager, Heru Tony Hardjanto, said the company plans to expand its routes to include to several major cities.
“We also plan to fly to new destinations like Medan-Penang-Phuket and Medan-Penang-Hat Yai next year interspersed with flights to Medan-Penang-Ho Chin Minh City,” Hardjanto said.
Currently, Sriwijaya has 19 aircraft comprising Boeing 737-200, 737-300 and 737-400. By June next year, the airline will have received five Boeing 737-500 planes, which it plans to use on its Medan-KL-Dubai route, according to Harjanto.
