Suntec pays tribute to Singapore Botanic Gardens

Singapore, 16 December 2009 – Singapore’s oldest national park - the Singapore Botanic Gardens celebrates its 150th anniversary this year - and Suntec Singapore International Convention & Exhibition Centre (Suntec Singapore), Asia’s leading convention and exhibition centre is proud to be a part of it.
Culminating in the year-long line-up of activities to mark the end of the celebrations, Suntec Singapore proudly joined 149 other organizations that included embassies, schools and various key organizations in Singapore in trimming, adorning, decorating and lighting up a 2 metre noble fir tree, illuminating Palm Valley. Themed “Trees of the World”, each tree is unique and carries its own special message.
Presiding over the spectacular light-up was Singapore’s Minister for National Development Mr Mah Bow Tan and the festivity was attended by about 5,000 members of the public.
Throughout its long and illustrious history, the Singapore Botanic Gardens (SBG) has played an integral role in the lives of every Singaporeans. Spacious and beautifully landscaped, with paved walkways winding around the luscious greenery, the Singapore Botanic Gardens, which sits on a 53-hectare (130-acre) spread, is a proud haven for the many visitors who walked through its doors.
The Singapore Botanic Gardens has not only become an institution for botanical and horticultural research and education, it has also evolved to be a national icon and grown to be one of the key tourist destinations in Singapore.
To mark the special occasion and as part of its year-long line up of exciting and educational celebrations, many visitors participated in the Gardens various activities that included exhibitions, forums, culinary demonstrations and mass wedding ceremony.
Suntec Singapore has been a long standing partner of the Singapore Botanic Gardens - having hosted the Singapore Garden Festival in 2006 and 2008. Its colossal halls on Levels 4 and 6 totaling 24,000 sqm were transformed into a “garden in the city”. The biennial Singapore Garden Festival, which attracted 300,000 visitors in 2008, is the only event in the world to bring together a wide international range of top award-winning designers to showcase their garden and floral creations all under one roof.
A major key component in the 2008 Festival was the trade exhibition and
conference targeted at landscape and horticulture professionals from around the world. It aimed to provide an international meeting place for industry players to network, exchange ideas and explore all facets of landscape design and horticulture in Asia. Suntec Singapore will, once again, play host to the fascinating festival in 2010.
